Citizenship

Proof of citizenship

Some individuals are Canadian citizens by descent. They may have been born outside of Canada to a Canadian parent, whether in the first or subsequent generation. We perform legal assessments to determine whether an individual is a Canadian citizen. We represent clients for proof of citizenship applications for adults and minors.

Since the entry into force on December 15, 2025 of Bill C-3, we represent many clients for proof of citizenship who were born abroad to a Canadian citizen in subsequent generations. We regularly represent individual and multi-member families for proof of citizenship applications.

Principal lawyer Lisa Middlemiss has spoken on podcasts and on panels regarding Canadian citizenship by descent. Recently, she spoke with CBC news:

Grant of citizenship

We represent clients for grant of citizenship (naturalization) applications. Clients who are Canadian permanent residents who meet the citizenship residency requirement of 1,095 days spent in Canada (a total of 3 years) in the prior 5-year period may consider applying for a grant of Canadian citizenship. We guide clients through simple and complex residency calculations and verify their eligibility to apply for citizenship, representing clients for grants of citizenship.

There are important benefits to becoming a Canadian citizen such as the right to vote and live anywhere in the world without needing to respect the permanent residency obligation. There are also practical benefits such as no longer needing to apply for Permanent Resident Card renewals.
